Phantoms of the forest. They could be confused for looking like twigs or leaves, and can mimic the sway of foliage in the wind. They look this way to avoid being eaten by predators, particularly birds. During dusk they become active, seeking out their preferred leaves to eat such as ribbonwood, pohutukawa, kanuka, manuka, rata, blackberry, raspberry, muelhenbeckia, and one of their favourites is the pepper tree where I found an actual female measuring 20cm long.
There are around 20 species of stick insects in New Zealand, including the smooth stick insect (Clitarchus hookeri) as shown here in my sculpture. Complete with a clever camouflaged body, to blend into its environment to evade predators.
