The Kawakawa tree is commonly found throughout New Zealand and is well known to the Maori for its long history of medicinal use. The heart shaped leaves are boiled in a pot to create a herbal tonic. The embroidery shows the common holes left by the cheeky nocturnal caterpillar that feasts on it at night.
