Whau Leaf of NZ thread sculpture.

The Whau Tree of New Zealand (Entelea arborescens) is also known as The NZ Cork Tree.  Found throughout both North and South Islands, they have very large heart-shaped leaves, and strange spiky seed pods.  Its wood is one of the lightest woods in the world, the early Māori used such wood for floats for their fishing nets and marker buoys. The trunks were also lashed together with supplejack to construct small rafts for hunting crayfish.   

This leaf sculpture was inspired by large trees in a regional park in Long bay where I often go running.  

Professionally framed using a white boxed frame and museum grade glass. This offers ultimate clarity, with reduced reflection, and has 99% UV protection from the sun.

The embroidery is made up of hundreds of tiny crochet stitches, made on a sewing machine, and finished by hand embroidery, mounted onto glass pins.
