Lichens are among earth’s oldest storytellers. Growing slowly across rock and bark, they embody resilience, patience and quiet collaboration. Their layered structure becomes a metaphor for the way relationships, memory and places are woven together over time.
As an artist I have long explored New Zealand’s native ecosystems. This artwork extends that practice, combining scientific observation with emotional response to reveal the hidden beauty of organisms that are often overlooked. My research has taken me deep into the mossy covered rainforests that are found in New Zealand. Equipped with my macro lens, I spend hours searching for intriguing lichens that could be my inspiration for my projects. I also like to study the microscopic structures, understand the geological textures and the symbolic language of layering, growth and co-existence. My hyper-realistic work aims to communicate the story visually, allowing thread to become the narrative rather than simply its illustration.
Professionally framed using a white boxed frame and museum grade glass. This offers ultimate clarity, with reduced reflection, and has 99% UV protection from the sun. Each sculpture is pinned away from the backing board, to give a 3-dimensional finish that casts shadows in certain light.
