Yellow eyed penguin 'Hoiho' 3D Thread Sculpture #2.

The Hoiho (yellow eyed penguin) is a highly threatened bird of New Zealand, uncommon to see, usually gulping down fish far out at sea, or hiding in the sand dunes at sunset.  It is one of the world's rarest penguin species.  Only 2600-3000 adults are left in the wild.  It is only found in the South Island and is now in serious decline due to overfishing and deep sea trawling.  I have been lucky to photograph these secretive birds, whilst venturing around the wild beaches of Dunedin.

This sculpture was made by hand-stitching hundreds of tiny threads into many layers.
