I was inspired by the White-faced Heron, one of my favourite wetland birds, found in New Zealand - especially common around estuaries, lakes and farmlands. Also called Matuku in Maori. Covered in elegant blue/grey plumage with a fierce dagger-like bill in which it uses to approach prey with lightening speed. One of the most fascinating behaviours I have observed is their ability to wobble dance with their long necks, which imitates the movement of long grass in the breeze, perhaps to blend in with their surroundings, to help catch fast-moving prey.
This is made up of hundreds of tiny stitches, made on a sewing machine, and finished by layers of hand embroidery.
