The Fernbird (matata) is an endemic bird of New Zealand, uncommon to see, usually hiding in the wetlands particularly around alpine areas. I have been lucky to photograph these secretive birds, whilst out hiking around Mount Ruapehu forests.
Each bird is stitched completely by hand, using specialised techniques. Every design is unique, and I only make one of each bird.
It is carefully pinned onto perspex, and encased in an acrylic box like a preserved museum specimen.
